The Lutz Mommartz Film Archive is a collection of the film works of German film-maker Lutz Mommartz, considered to be one of the pioneers in the film genre known as the "other cinema". Mommartz was born in Erkelenz in 1934 and spent most of his life in Dusseldorf. He began making movies in 1967 and eventually became Professor of Film at the Kunstakademie Munster. He still lives and works in Germany, dividing his time between Dusseldorf and Berlin.

Shotlist

With "400 m IFF" Mommartz leads back to a certain type of proceing, which he had conceived more than four years before and which at that time, how he expressly stresses, primarily was not connected with film. The film is just the art object, for which the central interest has to apply. It is only the releasing moment. It is primarily about, how the particular behaves in situations, in which he can not count on his range of its experiences. It concerns thus to a behavior research procedure and not to film art. Mommartz shows in his films, of what the reactivity of its "test subjects" is made of. Even a man such as Beuys, who works even with this thesis, appeared consterned...... With Mommartz one sees three persons failing. They all notice the exceptional case, do not possess the sovereignty to handle it. And during the procedures on the canvas the viewer becomes the participant, by expering the question, how he would have behaved in the same situation......

(K.U. Reinke XV.Westd. Short film days, report 69)

IFF is the designation for the available, already overlaid filmmaterial, by which approx. 400 m were used for this film and the remainder for "social plastics".

(Lutz Mommartz)

..... with 400 m IFF Mommartz experienced his Waterloo !
